Irish Ferries tapping into the nano-trip

You might have noticed a new advertising drive by Irish ferries, very similar to the below (but narrated by a man)

This, to me, is the language of the nano-trip – a (mainly European) travel trend that first emerged at the sharp end of the 00s and has been building up a head of steam recently. The France Tourist Authority adverts plastered all across the tube (encouraging people to ditch the staycation) is also in similar territory. On mainland Europe, you can also see various marketing campaigns targeting visitors from neighbouring countries specifically.

All this of course is certainly influenced by our long-standing desire for holidays abroad vs. professionalised budgeting.

On a global level, this feeds into the wider trend of inter-regional travel : this is seeing significant growth (particularly in China/Asia) and is expected to rise throughout the 10s.

Trend manifestation: Sainsbury’s to feed families for £50

In May 2011, UK supermarket Sainsbury’s launched a new initiative which promised to “feed your family for £50”.

In addition to the obvious financial benefits of the scheme  – which claims  to provide 3 meals a day for a family of 4  -  the supermarket also highlights its intention to inspire customers with new and innovative recipe ideas as well as ensure that those who participate receive their full 5-a-day allowance.

Users can also personalise the plan (by, for example, swapping meat items for vegetarian equivalents) or adjust the ingredients to feed families of different sizes. In all cases, meal costs are itemised and shoppers have the ability to add any ingredient to their shopping list.

Another example of a retailer helping its customers to budget effectively, find the best value for money and make healthier choices.
